The read. Meta took the placement checkboxes out of ad sets and put part of its business toolkit behind a subscription. Google moved most Search campaigns onto AI Max. ChatGPT opened its ads to UK and European advertisers, and Klaviyo opened its platform to AI agents. Meta's auction is 12% dearer than a year ago. Below, each change in three lines: what changed, what it means for a business like yours, and what to do this week.
1. Meta removed placement exclusions from ad sets
What changed. From late August 2026, Meta began removing the placement checkboxes from ad sets. The replacement is placement value rules: a bid adjustment per placement, down to a floor of minus 90%. Account-level exclusions remain as a hard switch. Meta's stated direction is to let the delivery system choose placements, on the way to the fully automated campaign its CEO described as "you tell us what your objective is, you connect to your bank account".
What it means. You can no longer switch off Audience Network or Reels in-stream inside an individual campaign. A minus 90% rule discourages a placement; it does not block it.
What to do. Write value rules now for the placements you have evidence against (a restaurant booking link in Audience Network is the classic case). Keep account-level exclusions for the placements where the case is absolute. Check the placement breakdown weekly through Q4, because the mix will move.
2. Meta One put business tools behind a subscription
What changed. On 15 September Meta launched Meta One business and creator tiers: Essential ($14.99), Advanced ($49.99), Expert ($149) and Max ($499) per profile per month, priced in US dollars at launch. Advanced and above gate story scheduling, clickable links in captions and Reels (up to four a month), account delegation without sharing passwords and extended insights. Phone support sits in Max only.
What it means. The free organic toolkit for a venue, studio or salon page just got smaller. For most of our clients the tier that matters is Advanced, because links in captions and scheduling are daily tools.
What to do. List which gated tools your team uses on each page and decide page by page. Do not pay for insights you already get from Ads Manager or your reporting.
3. Google moved Search campaigns onto AI Max
What changed. Through September, Google is automatically upgrading Search campaigns that use campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets to AI Max, which adds search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion. Dynamic Search Ads follow in February 2027 after advertiser feedback pushed the date back. Google's own figure is 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost per acquisition (CPA) or return on ad spend (ROAS) with the full suite.
What it means. Google can now write headline variations and send clicks to pages you did not choose. The controls that survive are brand inclusions and exclusions, location of interest, and URL inclusions and exclusions.
What to do. Before the upgrade lands, record your benchmarks (CPA, ROAS, top landing pages). Exclude careers, blog and policy URLs. Set your brand controls. Read search terms weekly for the first month.
4. ChatGPT ads opened to UK and European advertisers
What changed. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in the UK on 11 August, then across 31 European markets from 18 August, with self-serve access through its Ads Manager by 31 August. Ads appear only for Free and Go users, are labelled and sit apart from the answer, and conversations stay private from advertisers. Measurement runs through the OpenAI Pixel and a Conversions API. ChatGPT reported 900 million weekly users in February 2026.
What it means. A new intent channel with thin reporting and early-stage auctions (OpenAI is testing placements with several advertisers at once, priced second-price). Worth a foothold, not yet worth a budget line.
What to do. Create the Ads Manager account now, in the client's name, and invite the agency. Install the pixel. Hold spend until you have read our view in piece 6.
5. Klaviyo opened its platform to AI agents
What changed. At K:BOS on 9 September Klaviyo announced Klaviyo Headless, which makes more than 260 Klaviyo tools callable from Claude, ChatGPT or any AI system; natural-language queries that translate into SQL over the data platform; a next-generation personalisation layer with real customer holdouts; a Composer that brings finished work to you; and a Customer Agent that now works in more than 100 languages.
What it means. Segmenting, reporting and building flows can now be done by an agent working for you. The advantage moves to whoever has the cleanest data and the best flows.
What to do. Audit the seven core flows before Q4 and sync your buyer segments to Meta as exclusions. Full detail in piece 5.
6. Instagram: Live video ads and one-click Partnership Ads
What changed. Meta is rolling the Creator Marketing Hub out globally through the end of 2026, with one-click ad creation from creator content and permissions that expire on a date you set (15 September). Instagram Live video ads were reported to reach general availability on 29 September. Partnership ads were already running at a $10 billion annual rate at the end of Q1 2026, double the year before.
What it means. Creator and customer content moves into paid faster, with cleaner rights. Live ads suit launches, classes and tastings.
What to do. Set up content permissions with the creators and regulars you already work with. Test one Partnership Ad in October.
7. The Q4 starting gun, and Meta's prices
What changed. Amazon confirmed Prime Big Deal Days for 6 to 7 October in 22 countries including the UK and Spain. Meta's second-quarter results showed average price per ad up 12% year on year, impressions up 14% and revenue up 28%.
What it means. Q4 competition for attention starts in the first week of October, and the Meta auction is already 12% dearer than a year ago.
What to do. Lock Q4 budgets and creative by mid-October. Our Q4 playbook is piece 3.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still block placements on Meta? At account level, yes. At ad set level the checkboxes are going; a placement value rule at minus 90% is the strongest discouragement available, and it is not a block.
Do I have to pay for Meta One to run ads? No. Ads Manager is unchanged. Meta One gates organic tools such as story scheduling and links in captions.
Will my Google Search campaigns change without me doing anything? If they use campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets, yes, during September 2026. Dynamic Search Ads move in February 2027. Your keywords, budgets and conversion actions carry over; check the controls listed above.
