Restaurant sales grew 2.4% in August. Here is how to make December the month that counts

  • By Dr Josh

The read. Restaurants led UK hospitality in August with like-for-like sales up 2.4%, against 0.8% for the sector, 0.5% for pubs and a 2.5% fall for bars (NIQ RSM tracker, published 17 September). It was the fourth month of growth and the sixteenth without growth in real terms, which is why December has to do more than usual. The plan below starts in October, is designed for the group chat where bookings are actually decided, and is measured by the booking system rather than the pixel.

By the numbers

  • Restaurants up 2.4% like for like in August 2026; pubs up 0.5%; bars down 2.5%; on-the-go down 5.5%.
  • Sector up 0.8% like for like, or 4.1% including new openings.
  • London up 0.6%, outside London up 0.8%.
  • Four months of growth, sixteen months without real-terms growth once inflation is counted.
  • "A stable if unspectacular summer," in the words of NIQ's Karl Chessell.

December is decided in October

Christmas is the one month when a restaurant's demand outruns its capacity, so the job is not to create demand but to capture it early and steer it into the slots that need it. In the groups we work with, party enquiries begin in the first half of October and the largest bookings are placed before mid-November. That is agency experience rather than published research, and it is consistent across every restaurant account we have run.

The practical consequence: the Christmas menu, the group booking page and the enquiry form need to be live and advertised by the second week of October. Every week later is a week of bookings placed with a competitor whose page was ready.

Design for the forwarder, not the clicker

Group bookings are social decisions. One person sees the ad, forwards it to the group chat, and the group decides. So the ad has to work for the person forwarding it: one line they can send with it ("Set menu £45, private room for 20, Thursday 11 December still free"), a photo of a full room with real people in it, and a booking page that opens cleanly on a phone with the date already visible.

The first frame matters as much here as anywhere. A guest reacting to a plate mid-service beats an empty dining room every time; the reasons are in our note on the 2.3-second rule.

The four-part plan

  1. October: capture party demand. Christmas menu and group booking page live. Meta ads to an enquiry form with a reply inside the hour, because speed to reply decides group bookings. Audience: within travelling distance of the venue, plus everyone who booked in the last two years. Creative: the room, full, with faces.

  2. November: sell gift cards as your Black Friday product. Gift cards are the one thing a restaurant can discount without discounting the table. Run them from the week before Black Friday (27 November) to 20 December, with a January-dining message alongside so the card is spent in the quiet month.

  3. December: fill Monday to Wednesday. Weekends sell themselves. Use the booking system's lapsed-guest segment (no visit in six months) for an early-week offer by email, and spend paid social on the days that need it rather than sevenths of the week.

  4. January: keep the room warm. Set menus, events and the January-dining message to the gift card buyers. The fresh-start phase is real for hospitality too: people book the things they promised themselves in December.

Creative that fills rooms

Three formats in every ad set: a short video with a real reaction in the first frame, a carousel of the menu and the room, and a static with the one-line offer. Test Instagram Live video ads (reported to reach general availability on 29 September) for a tasting or a menu launch, and Partnership Ads with the local creators who already eat with you; the Creator Marketing Hub now handles permissions with an expiry date. If your group is in scope of the UK's less healthy food advertising restrictions, in force since 5 January 2026 for paid online ads, keep the creative brand-led and check identifiable products against the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) guidance before you spend.

Measure bookings, not clicks

Platform reporting cannot see a phone booking, a walk-in or a table booked on a laptop the day after someone saw the ad on their phone. So we measure restaurant campaigns in three tiers: what the platform reports; what the booking system shows when you match it to the campaign period against the same weekday-aligned weeks last year; and what changed across the whole venue, including walk-ins and covers. The first tier tells you the ads delivered. The second and third tell you whether the restaurant is fuller.

Proof: a London restaurant, summer 2026

In the first six weeks after launch, reservations attributed to paid social rose 160% and cost per reservation fell 38% (report period 13 to 19 July 2026 against launch week). Over the first nine weeks, booked revenue from the campaign ran at 25.6 times the media spend, measured in the venue's own booking records against the same weeks of 2025. The venue's whole-week covers moved with it. Case study available on request.

What to do this week

  1. Publish the Christmas menu and the group booking page, mobile first.
  2. Launch the party enquiry campaign with a reply-within-the-hour rule and a named owner.
  3. Build the lapsed-guest and past-booker audiences from the booking system.
  4. Shoot the room full, with faces, at the next busy service.
  5. Set up the booking-system comparison against the same weeks of 2025 before the campaign starts, so the December read is clean.

Frequently asked questions

When should a restaurant start Christmas advertising? The second week of October at the latest for party and group bookings. Gift cards from the week before Black Friday. Early-week offers from the first week of December.

Meta or Google for restaurant bookings? Both, with different jobs. Google Search catches people already looking ("Christmas party venue Soho"). Meta creates the forward to the group chat. In our accounts Meta produces the larger share of new group bookings; Search converts the ones who already know your name.

How do we know the ads produced the bookings? Match the booking system to the campaign period against the same weekday-aligned weeks last year, and look at whole-venue covers, not only platform-attributed bookings. If the room is not fuller, the attribution does not matter.
